AHDS — Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome
What is AHDS?
Acute Hemorrhagic Diarrhea Syndrome (AHDS) is a rapid and serious condition affecting the stomach and intestines in dogs, characterised by sudden onset of bloody diarrhoea along with vomiting and anorexia.
It is most commonly seen in small and toy breeds, though it can occur in dogs of any age, size, breed, or sex.
Signs & Symptoms
- Sudden, severe diarrhea (often bloody)
- Vomiting
- Lethargy or weakness
- Loss of appetite
- Abdominal pain (may show discomfort when touched)
- Dehydration (dry gums, increased thirst, or sunken eyes)
What causes AHDS?
The cause of AHDS in dogs has been the subject of vigorous debate and research, but it remains unknown. Theories have ranged from bacterial infections, allergic reactions to food, parasites and toxins.
It often affects highly strung dogs, so stress, anxiety and hyperactivity have been cited as possible contributing factors.
AHDS survival rate
The prognosis for AHDS in dogs is generally good as long as treatment is early, appropriate and aggressive.
In most cases, dogs with AHDS will need to be hospitalised for at least 24 hours, with the average hospital stay being 3 days in dogs with AHDS.
How is AHDS typically treated?
Treatment for AHDS generally focuses on supportive care to address the clinical symptoms and may evolve as the pet’s condition progresses.
Common treatments include:
- Aggressive Intravenous (IV) fluids to prevent dehydration and restore electrolyte balance.
- Anti-emetics and anti-diarrheal medications to control vomiting and diarrhea.
- Pain management to alleviate any abdominal discomfort.
- A bland, easily digestible diet is introduced gradually once the pet stabilises.
Each treatment plan is tailored to your pet’s specific needs and response to care.
Prevention of AHDS
- Monitor Diet: Avoid sudden dietary changes, overfeeding of treats and stick to a consistent, high-quality pet food.
- Limit Access to Harmful Substances: Prevent your pet from eating spoiled food, garbage, or non-food items.
- Maintain a Healthy Gut: Probiotics and increased fiber intake may help support gut health.
- Stress and Anxiety reduction
- Regular parasite preventatives
