Total Ear Canal Ablation
What is TECA?
Total Ear Canal Ablation (TECA) and bulla osteotomy is a delicate surgical procedure that involves the removal of the diseased ear canal and tympanic bulla (middle ear), leaving only the pinna (ear flap) intact.
When is TECA performed?
TECA is performed to address severe ear conditions that do not respond to medical treatment. Common reasons include chronic ear infections, congenital stenosis (narrowing) of the ear canal, and growths (masses).
A CT scan of the head is often performed prior to surgery to confirm he diagnosis.
Does my pet need surgery?
Although often considered as a last resort by some veterinarians, it’s important for owners to understand that the longer an ear infection persists, the more severe the changes in the ear become, leading to prolonged pain.
As the ear canal is so damaged, ear drops cannot reach the area where the infection is. This means the infection cannot be properly treated, and the cycle of pain and discomfort continues.
This can eventually cause the pet to be unable to tolerate medication, become head-shy from pain, and experience changes in behavior and interactions with owners.
Surgery is recommended to improve your pet’s quality of life, especially when other treatments have failed and the condition is causing ongoing discomfort.
Are there complications of surgery?
Overall the prognosis is very positive, with pets enjoying an excellent quality of life, without the need for daily ear drops.
The primary risk of a TECA surgery is associated with the facial nerve, which runs near the surgical site. Trauma to the nerve can result in facial drooping or difficulty blinking after surgery. In most cases it is temporary and will resolve without treatment.
A minority of patients may experience chronic drainage, indicating presence of a persistent infection. This improves with antibiotics however some may require a second procedure.
Will surgery affect my pet's hearing?
Many pet owners anticipate hearing loss after surgery due to the removal of the eardrum, but in reality, they often notice little difference in hearing afterward.
